A Look Back at Our History
The St Columba Presbyterian Church once had a single-story building of approximately 70 square meters within its premises. For many years, this structure served as the presbytery for successive pastors. However, as pastors opted for different accommodations, the building was left unused.
In 2018, a group of dedicated women, known as the “Ruby Sisters” took the initiative to renovate and expand the building. Their vision was to create “Karibu Café” a welcoming space that would not only serve lunch but also offer a Bible stand, cooking classes, and a marketplace for handcrafted goods.
The renovation process was extensive and required significant financial support, which came in the form of donations from Cevaa, personal contributions, and interest-free loans. Unfortunately, the project faced setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the departure of several key members. Despite these challenges, one lasting result remains: the renovated space is now highly functional for church activities. It features two kitchens, two small classrooms for children, a lounge with a buffet bar, and restrooms. Additionally, a spacious covered area of approximately 120 square meters allows for community gatherings, post-service refreshments, and themed meals. A beautiful garden has also been established, maintained weekly by a dedicated team every Friday, with additional support from a housekeeper.
A Fresh Start in 2024
At the beginning of 2024, the Synodal Committee requested assistance from Defap, a French missionary organization, to send a volunteer under the International Solidarity Volunteer program to help relaunch the Karibu Project. In December 2024, Ursula L. arrived to lead this effort.
To support this initiative, all six parishes have been invited to pray for the project during worship services and on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Meetings are being organized with church representatives and members of the Presbyterian Council of Saint Columba to develop a shared vision for the project’s future.
Looking Ahead: March 15 and April 12 Events
The next planning meeting is scheduled for March 15. After a dedicated time of prayer, the expanded working group will outline the project’s vision and its core themes. Additionally, they will prepare for a special event on April 12, where the entire Saint Columba Church community will be invited to participate in the Karibu Project.
Guided by Scripture
As we move forward, we find encouragement in God’s Word:
“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain.” – Psalm 127:1 (NIV)
“He has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father – to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen!” – Revelation 1:6 (NIV)
With hearts united in service and openness to God’s will, we commit ourselves to this mission. May the Karibu Project become a place of welcome, fellowship, and spiritual growth for all.
